Photography

What do all these photos have in common?

They are all unedited photos, direct from my iPhone camera!  I refer to an iPhone(and not other makes) in these pages as that's where my camera phone experience lies.

Most serious photographers would mock the use of a camera phone.  My experience suggests they should take note. The powerful algorithms that wield wide angle-panoramic lens options, instant stacking with HDR, and HEIF/HEIC image formats, make the new iPhone cameras a useful companion on any shoot.  And the low weight, waterproof features of the camera add to the appeal.

You can capture fine detail, stop action with fast shutter speeds(see Great White Shark breaching photos) and take beautiful landscapes, portraits and macro. With a little imagination, anything is possible.

The image of the black bear cub (and papa bear below) was captured by my very talented and bright, twelve year old daughter, Ava.  The images were hand held, looking thru the eyepiece of a spotting scope.

What else can these cameras do? Check out the autoexposure capabilities below. The waterfall cave photo was included to show how these cameras can correctly expose the foreground, middleground and background of an image. An Icelandic professional photographer was in shock when he first saw me capture this image.  He explained, " Professionals struggle with the varied lighting conditions, inside and outside of that cave, even with expensive gear."

Those that wish to capture such images, can do so with a simple iPhone camera and a creative mind. To obtain pointers, check out my Blog Page or simply follow my Instagram feed.

Is portrait photography your focus?  The iPhone camera does that well also. Use the portrait setting on your camera phone to reveal excellent bokeh.  For those that don't know what bokeh is, it's the esthetic quality of blur that surrounds your subject in the photo.    To give it a try, simply select the "portrait" setting when preparing to take a photo with the iPhone.  Frame the subject until the box surrounding the subject turns green, then take your photo.

Though the iPhone does not offer all the features available to a serious photographer that a DSLR or mirrorless system provides.  It is a wonderful way for beginning photographers to get great images while learning the ropes.  Wish I had one when I was starting out.   For more info, click the icon below to follow my instagram feed.
